A woman's perspective on philosophy?

Torri Tippey: It certainly used to be biased, and many female philosophers still dissect philosophers' works for phallocentric themes, but I believe certainly most modern philosophy is not biased against women. Certainly, I am a female philosophy student and haven't felt particularly 'feminist' about much recent work, but men such as Schopenhauer did take a less-than-favourable view of the role of women within society and the world. So basically, I suppose it depends how far back you take it. It doesn't necessarily exactly correlate with the rights of women within Western society (when women were given equal rights, their contribution/influence/role within philosophy began to equalize) but there is some correlation....Show more

Roxane Leathers: It is as biased as psychology is. I think the fact that this question is even asked is a little strange but I suppose the general lack of significant female contribution would lead one to wonder. The theories with the most i! mpact are gender neutral but reading through philosophical works one is bound to come across numerous anti-female remarks. This was largely due to the fact that apparently having a woman around makes all men unable to concentrate on anything, (temptresses, all of them), therefore making many historical philosophers feel that women and philosophy is like oil and water....Show more

Barton Slisz: Obviously it shouldn't be biased, but how many of the great philosophers are women? Come on, name one...?

Majorie Chester: Well im not a philosophy buff, but i dont see why it would be biased. all it is to me is just seeing things in a different perspective & trying to figure out this thing called life. I dont know of any philosophies that aim towards a specific gender (if you do, enlighten me please)
