Board Games?

Vita Moodie: join the uscf their website is www.uschess.org lot's of information

Luke Creitz: I'd say get an exchange.

Brice Greczkowski: There are literally thousands of board games (over 4000 games are listed here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com , which is the best board game information site on the internet) to choose from, but most of the answers you've been getting are the old stand bys like Monopoly, Payday, etc. Games that were invented many decades ago. Well progress marches on, and there's been a revolution in board games over the last decade, with the invasion of the "Eurogames". These are high quality well designed boardgames, originally from Europe but now translated to english and available in North America as well American game makers have been emulating the Eurogame style and quality for a decade. These new generation of games are all are characterized by simple rules, lots of player interaction, and many strategies (there are many different w! ays to win). A game like Monopoly (which is ranked near the very bottom at #4063 (see http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/1406) or PayDay ranked #4056 (see http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/1797) just doesn't measure up (sure they're fun to play, that is until you're exposed to something better) against the new improved games that started coming out in the mid 90s. For a ranked list of board games (from #1 to #4085) look here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/browser.php?itemtype=...As for your sister it's hard to say what she might like. How old is she? What are her interests?Categories of games can be found here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/browser.php?itemtype=...It's just a question of clicking on a category your sister might like, and then clicking on the game icons (listed from top rank down) to check out the game, it's graphics, user reviews, etc. to select that perfect game for her.Hope this opens up a brave new world of board games for you. Good luck.Bill...Show ! more

Providencia Serpe: Depending of the type of compute! r you're playing against, beating the computer may be too difficult a goal, this can make you frustrated and give up on chess, but don't! The best players in the world can't beat the best programs out there. Even second rate programs give titled players problems. It would be much better to play some free online chess with other beginners out there who are learning just like you -- the games will be much more satisfying!Luckily you can make a lot of improvement as a beginner by following a few simple rules. These rules involve how to open a game, basic tactics, and remembering to look at your opponent's move before choosing your next move. Also when you learn these rules they will make a lot of senseFor example in the opening, make only a few pawn moves to control the center, the majority of your first 10 moves should be non-pawn moves. Try not to move the same piece twice in the opening. The faster you bring your army out, the better your position will be relative to! your opponent's. If he trys to attack with 1 or 2 pieces while you're simply making more developing mvoes, how much of a chance do thoes 2 pieces have against your entire army? Makes sense right :)http://www.chesscorner.com/tutorial/learn.htmis a good place to start, be sure to look at "simple checkmating patterns" "openings" and "tactics"After a few untimed games trying to practice the 10 steps you learned in "openings" (don't worry if you win or lose) Look at the first 5 tactical motifs under "tactics" You can also look at the last three (Overloading, Defelction, and Decoying) but don't sweat it if it all looks like different versions of "removing the defender"Again, tactics will make a lot of sense, if you attack two pieces at the same time, your opponent only has one move to defend or run away with, you will win the other piece. ALL chess tactics can be understood as ways of creating two (or more) threats, only one of which your opponent can meet. Some people on her! e have suggested speed games, but these types of games are not good for! improving the quality of your chess. Try long or untimed games where you can relax and try to find a good move, and don't worry about winning or loosing. It's been said that you have to lose 100 games before you can start learning, and every good chessplayer out there has lost thousands of games....Show more

Claire Billegas: scene it, balderdash, taboo, trivial pursuit

Patricia Dornbos: 'Scene It's are so good! They are DVD and board games though, so make sure you've got a player..There are loads of themes..Harry Potter, James Bond, Friends, Music, Nickeloden.. CRAZY!

Spencer Heidtbrink: To get better at chess you should know learn how to checkmate your opponent if he got only his king left. Try checkmate (not stalemate) a white king with the following combinations:1. Black queen + black king2. Black Rook + black kingChallenge3. Two black bishop in different colored squares+ a black king (yes its possible)Playing with the computer is not a good way to! learn chess when you are a beginner. You loose patience, cause you spend time thinking and make your moves, the computer does not think and make its reply immediately....Show more

Ayesha Genova: You should start off defensively by castling & protecting your king. You should try to bring your queen into play with back up from your knights & bishop. To get off to a good start you will need to be cautious & make sure you are covering all your pieces. Its a good idea to use your pawns in a zigzag fashion. Always remember what the pieces are worth,Queen 10Castle 5Knights/Bishop 3Pawns 1If you know the 'fools mate' way, I think this is a good opener to get some of your pieces out and go on the attack straight away. At the end of the day it's just practise & trying to learn from your previous mistakes. The more you play the better you'll become. I started off playing the computer on level 1 & with practise you'll get better in no time. Good luck. x...Show more

I started out 3 years ago on yahoo chess with 1,000 more loses than wins, 40,000 games later I have 4,000 more wins than loses..

Stevie Kizziar: I know how to play chess, but am absolutely terrible. How can I get better? I am not looking to become a grandmaster, but I would at least like to be able to beat the computer.

Ariel Arons: Usually you become as good as the person you play. I am quite average, and i started teaching my little sister who couldn't play. Now she is almost as good as me. My mum was the one who taught me to play, and she doesn't play me anymore because she doesn't want to get beaten.I suggest you find someone who is better than you to play - but don't play someone too good, because they might beat you easily and that might demotivate you. Play someone who you might beat once in a while, but usually don't. Also if you join a club or team, they might have tips on strategies. I have a few up my sleeve myself :D...Show more

No point getting her a game that nobody else will play.Monopoly and Chess are two games almost everyone knows.Cranium is a very good game. It combines trivia, sculpting, drawing, word play etc... so is good for everyone as unlike other games no one is usually better at all of it than anyone else. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. I've played this game with friends, coworkers and family and everyone has thoroughly enjoyed it....Show more
